As the only Montessori school on Oahu serving children from age 2 to grade 6, this independent, non-sectarian school in Makiki offers a comprehensive education in the world-renowned education program. Its age-appropriate class materials, instructional approach, and specially-trained teachers combine to provide a complete Montessori program that supports the natural development of children. Celebrating its 35th anniversary last year, the school emphasizes academics, peace education, and environmental study to develop competent students who are respectful in their relationships to others and the natural world. “Our children are encouraged to ‘learn how to learn’ and gain independence and self-confidence,” says Head of School Patsy Tom.
Tom Yoneyama, parent of two MCS alumni, observes, “With an MCS elementary foundation, my two children not only transitioned smoothly into more traditional school settings, but were able to very successfully complete their private high school education and go on to earn scholarships at private colleges on the mainland. MCS’ greatest advantage is its ability to accommodate children with a broad range of personalities and strengths.” Adds Denise Ellinwood, mother of an MCS alumnus, “MCS gives children the confidence to try new or different things. That’s what we all need.”
The small school environment means that the children’s progress is carefully monitored, while helping them develop close relationships with teachers and peers and fostering positive character development. Dedicated teachers incorporate professional enrichment opportunities, such as the invitations extended to two elementary teachers to participate in deep-sea research voyages, into the classroom curriculum.
