Open house pick of the week: Waialae Iki

As I was reviewing the open houses for this week, this unusual design caught my eye. Who wouldn’t want to live in a house that stands out from the others? (Click here for details.)

The unusual façade is due mostly to the covered balcony above the three-car garage, designed to help enjoy the amazing views from its perch atop the exclusive, gated Waialae Iki V community. But the split-level design gives it a little flair, as well.

Built in 1987 and remodeled in 2011, this five-bedroom, three-bathroom home sits on a spacious, almost quarter-acre lot. It’s very quiet, not just because of the neighborhood itself, but also the fact that there are no neighbors in the back, as some other homes have. The residence is 2,456 square feet with a fairly open design to give it a feeling of extra elbow room.

The renovations included Merbeau Hardwood floors, travertine marble, granite countertops and new windows throughout. The kitchen was completely redone, including solid cherry cabinets with a soft close feature, stainless steel appliances, granite counters, and recessed lighting.

There’s even a fireplace in the family room … you know, for those chilly Hawaiian winter nights. (Hey, it happens.)  The living room is sunken, with 15-foot ceilings and crown moldings.

A new photovoltaic system was recently installed, which is a nice, green touch.

Remember, although it’s a single-family home, it’s a part of a planned community, so you have to pay association dues. The fee includes include high-speed internet, telephone, cable with premiumservices and security.

This home will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. this Sunday. Happy house hunting!

Money talk: $1,325,000 fee simple
