Living large on Diamond Head

There are a lot of nice homes in Honolulu, but not many that can be classified as mansions. This one, located on Kaualio Pl. off Diamond Head Rd., is one of the few.  (Click here for details.)

The lot is big, especially for a mountain-side property, spanning 13, 657 square feet. The home is proportionally huge, with 6,234 square feet of living area and almost 600 square feet of lanai. Even the five-car garage is larger than some homes, taking up 1,000 square feet.

It doesn't matter that the home is 43 years old, as the design is stunning for any generation and it's been fully renovated to look like new. One of the most beautiful elements, as you can see in the photos, is the way the ceilings have additional vaulting—some rooms more dramatic than others—to give the illusion of even more room in already spacious settings.

From the moment you walk through the raised entry flanked by water, you are stunned into silence by the spectacular living room with matching marble, raised hearth fireplace, and soaring ceilings.

The mansion is so large, it actually has wings (as in, north and south). The North wing has four bedroom suites, a dining room and a bar; the South master bedroom wing has an office, view loft and spa tub. Midway is the eat-in kitchen, which has lots of counter and cabinet space.

The rest of the place is typical mansion stuff: Tiled salt-water pool, solarium spa waterfall and a gym-so you never have to leave your gated sanctuary, unless you want to. If you want to see it for yourself, it will be open this Sunday.
