Open house pick of the week: Makiki
If you happen to be familiar with the Village Maluhia building in Makiki, you know most of the units are pretty basic. There are a few stylishly renovated ones, but none look like PH 07, which finished its facelift just a few days ago. (Click here for details.)
Realtor Matt Brummel, who is also listing the unit, overhauled it in a month-literally working 30 days straight. The unit now has new granite counter tops with a mosaic glass tile back splash, wood cabinets and new stainless steel appliances in the kitchen. The custom, rounded soffit with recessed dimmer lighting that matches the custom rounded granite bar below gives it a very modern vibe. The island hood vent that comes down from the soffit is also an unusual touch that you won't see in many condos, and probably none in this neighborhood.
The floor throughout the whole unit is ceramic tile and the bathroom walls and shower are all done in travertine. "The only thing we didn't replace is the tub," Brummel says.
This isn't the first time Brummel has taken an investment property and renovated it to sell. Back in July, we blogged about a Salt Lake condo that he completely remodeled from a concrete box in shambles into a pretty home.
"My investment properties are unique in that my decisions are made from a home owner perspective, not an investor," Brummel says. "I could have spent $5,000 and sold this a week after closing and made more money than doing it the way I did, but where is the fun and pride to be had in that? I want to create a home that I would want to live in, myself. Sometimes we go overboard in making a dream home, but in the end, we're so proud of the results, we don't care."
This 630-square-foot penthouse unit has two bedrooms, one bathroom, and one covered parking stall. Again, if you're looking for a place that is out of the way of traffic caused by international dignitaries, this spot is close, but not too close.
Its first open house is this Sunday, so make sure you put it on your itinerary to see. Happy house hunting!
Money talk: $325,000 fee simple
