Longtime kama‘āina will be surprised to see how swanky the old lowrise condo on 1880 Kahakai Drive—behind the Hawaiʻi Convention Center—has become, thanks to a developer that converted and upgraded the building.

The complex, called the Commodore, was built in the late 1940s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to provide housing for naval officers. The apartment building was purchased in 2006 by Commodore LLC for $6.5 million, then renovated. The four-story Commodore Waikīkī has 43 one-bedroom, two-bedroom and penthouse condominiums ranging from $280,500 to $549,000 fee simple.

The Commodore Waikīkī has four two-bedroom penthouses with spacious lānai ranging from 450 to 1,188 square feet. Each penthouse was renovated in 2014 with upgraded granite counters, wood laminate and tile floors, appliances including washer and dryer, window coverings and brightly painted walls.

There are also six two-bedroom units ranging from 589 to 592 square feet, all with Ala Wai Canal views. Some of the units have been upgraded with granite, tile, carpet, window coverings, air conditioners, appliances and ceiling fans.

The largest selection is in the 32 one-bedroom units ranging from 392 to 408 square feet, some with Ala Wai views. These vary in renovations, with some offering new flooring, cabinets, appliances, lighting, window coverings, fans, air conditioners and granite countertops.

All of the condo units have an open floor plan that gives the feeling of a spacious connected living environment.

Parking is at a premium; this is Waikīkī, after all: there are just 13 parking stalls for the Commodore Waikīkī, at $60,000 per stall.

The project’s broker is Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties. For more information or to make an appointment, visit commodore-waikiki.com, call 593-6450 or email sales@commodore-waikiki.com.  The building will be open this Sunday, March 29, from 2 to 5 p.m.
