Open house pick of the week: Makiki
You never know what listings will catch your eye when you’re looking through hundreds of open houses each week. I was pretty uninspired until I saw this one, in which the description not only pointed out that the building is pet-friendly, but that there is no weight limit.
For those of you who don’t live in condos, here’s the brief: Some condos don’t allow pets. From what I can see, however, most do—and they usually allow up to two pets, no farm animals. My building has a rule that you need to carry your pet when riding in the elevator; others require your pet (usually a dog, since other animals don’t need to be let out) to be under 10 pounds.
A couple of years ago, one of my twitter friends was beside herself. A neighbor had ratted her out to the condo board and said that her 10-year-old dog needed to go because it was more than 10 pounds. It was a small dog, but apparently overweight, and the board gave her an ultimatum to get rid of the dog unless it could get down to 10 pounds in a week. (I’m not going to get started on overweight condo residents who cause more pain than a senior dog, but you get the point.)
Too bad my friend didn’t live in the Town House on Victoria Street in Makiki. This building, although built in 1961, is well managed and maintained. This two-bedroom listing is apparently the only one available for sale right now, so it’s worth a look. The kitchen and one bathroom are newly renovated, which is a plus. The unit is 876 square feet, a good size for an older condo in this area. (Click here for details.)
The building is convenient to the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Blaisdell, and Straub and Queens hospitals; the No. 4 bus stops right in front, so you could take that directly to downtown or the University of Hawaii.
Aside from the pet allowance, people like the Town House for its rooftop pool and barbecue area, which offers panoramic views of the mountains, city and ocean.
