The Latest Trend in Honolulu Living? “Right-Sizing”
More couples are selling their larger homes in favor of condos in downtown Honolulu.
To those who know her, it comes as no surprise that Lori McCarney, CEO of Bikeshare Hawai‘i, recently chose to change course and move to a new neighborhood that fits her active lifestyle. McCarney is an avid triathlete and has completed more than 10 Ironman races. She runs a company committed to easing traffic, promoting fitness, creating businesses for retailers and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.
McCarney and husband Rick Keene recently sold their East O‘ahu home and moved into a downtown condo. Their Wai‘alae Nui Ridge home sold in days. The 3,550 square-foot five-bedroom, four-bathroom property was situated on a 9,000-square-foot rim lot with a gazebo overlooking the view. It was a perfect place to raise the children, who have now flown the coop, living on their own for more than three years now.

The couple’s new place, a two-bedroom, two-bath condominium at Harbor Court, has an equally stunning but completely different view overlooking Honolulu Harbor. It’s significantly smaller, at 1,500 square feet. And they love it. When asked why they down-sized, McCarney says that, really, what they did was “right-size.” The couple loves to travel, and a home requires more work than a condo, including coordinating a house sitter when they’re away.
Why now? McCarney, who formerly worked in marketing at a real estate company, notes that the market is currently strong, and it felt like a smart time to sell. Neighboring properties were selling quickly. They had no reason to wait.
What do they look forward to the most about their new urban lifestyle? Trying out all the great restaurants local entrepreneurs are starting up in the downtown and Chinatown area, walking and riding bikes (of course!) around town, and getting to really know the Chinatown arts scene.
