Slate.com has a well-made interactive graphic here that uses Bureau of Labor Statistics to track U.S. job losses in this recession. You can click on any month between Jan. 2007 and Oct. 2009 to see whether a county gained or lost jobs at that time.
In Honolulu, we lost jobs in eight out of 12 months in 2007, actually gained jobs in eight out of 12 months in 2008—and then lost jobs in all 10 of the months covered out of 2009. There is a perverse pleasure in clicking on the months and watching the red circle of doom get bigger and bigger. “Oh,” one thinks. “That’s how bad it’s been.”
UPDATE: Fixed misspelling of "perverse." Thanks, Josh, for the catch!
