Before the warehouses and high-rises, Kaka‘ako was home to terraced agriculture, fishing villages and salt ponds. The salt harvested in Kaka‘ako was an important commodity for the ali‘i, who used it in blessings, purification, preservation and as a source of income.

 

The area was first developed for residential use in the 1800s, when tight-knit immigrant camps were formed in the area. After World War II, Kaka‘ako was re-zoned to a commercial district, creating the urban landscape it’s known for today. As Kaka‘ako once again undergoes a revitalization, the importance of its past is referenced across the community in gathering spaces such as SALT at Our Kaka‘ako, and the incorporation of walking paths and architectural design that compliments the area’s natural environment.
