The environmental organization Greenpeace vessel arrived in Honolulu Thursday greeted by the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s Hōkulēʻa canoe.

The ship Arctic Sunrise is docked near Pier 12 and is available for free public tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekend of Oct. 27–28. Part of the mission is to call attention to the problems of plastic pollution, worsened by single-use plastic bottles and other items.

The ship just visited the Great Garbage Patch in the Pacific Ocean. According to a news release, while in Hawai‘i, Greenpeace will partner with the Protect Kaho‘olawe ‘Ohana and Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission to hold a beach cleanup and brand audit at Kaho‘olawe to help identify the corporations most responsible for branded single-use plastic pollution in the region.

The organization notes the state is particularly hard hit by plastic pollution that moves across the Pacific and washes up on the Islands’ shores.

Free tours of the Arctic Sunrise are available Saturday, October 27 and Sunday, October 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
