Waikiki

The name Waikīkī means “sprouting water,” a reference to the rivers and springs that richly flowed into the area. Before there were hotels, much of the area was marsh and wetland that provided taro and fishponds to the Native Hawaiian population. Waikīkī also served as a playground for water-based activities such as surfing and paddling.

Beyond the hotels and iconic, Waikīkī is home to a diverse and vibrant residential community. Today, there are more than 135 condominium buildings, with even more on the rise. A number of projects to revitalize and beautify Waikīkī have been undertaken in the past decade, from building a new promenade on Kūhiō Beach to upgrading traffic signals and lamp posts with hanging baskets of flowers.

Offering easy access to supermarkets, restaurants, shopping centers and beautiful views stretching from Diamond Head to the Wai‘anae Coast, it’s easy to see why tourists and residents alike are drawn to Waikīkī.
