PHOTOS: Hawaii Beaches Named America’s Best by Dr. Beach

It’s been a big year for Duke Kahanamoku Beach, which is the official name for the beach in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort.

First, it had a cameo in the latest remake of the 1954 Japanese sci-fi film Godzilla, playing the beach where the monster wades ashore to begin his rampage through Waikiki.

Then, Florida International University coastal science professor Stephen Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, named it “America’s Best Beach for 2014.”

Each year, Leatherman comes up with a top 10 list of America’s best beaches, based on 50 criteria including amenties, cleanliness and safety. The presence of 350-foot tall, atomic mutant sea monsters is not a factor.

Never mind that the photo on the right is actually Queen’s Beach, not Duke Kahanamoku Beach. Queen’s Beach has a Duke Kahanamoku statue, so cut the Doc some slack.

Two other Hawaii beaches made the list, as well.

Waimanalo State Beach Park (above) took the No. 4 spot on the list, and Hamoa Beach on Maui took No. 5.

Once a beach wins the top spot, Dr. Beach takes it out of the running for future lists. Here are the other Oahu beaches Dr. Beach has been selected over the years:

Hanauma Bay (2004). 

Kailua Beach Park (1998) and Lanikai Beach (above, 1996). Now we know how Lanikai got so touristy. Darn you, Dr. Beach!
