Readers' Picks

Movie Theater

Film lovers voted for Consolidated Ward 16 as their favorite place for big-screen movie watching. Did you know you can book theater space during non-showtimes for early school shows, private screenings, conferences or even church services?

New Thing in Honolulu

We mourned the loss of Lost—but readers rejoiced when Hawaii Five-0 came back to town! Once again, locals are being treated to celeb sightings and spotting film crews in their neighborhoods. The show’s even fun for those who don’t dig it on a critical level: One episode’s reference to nonexistent Kukui High has inspired a cult webpage where you can browse the faux yearbook, buy Fighting Nuts garb and hear a rendition of the class song (which urges sports teams to “raise your nuts up to the sky”). Hooray for Hollywood!

Arts Venue

A world-class collection with 5,000 years’ worth of art is housed right here in Hawaii at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. “We have a Van Gogh that is sought out for exhibitions around the world,” says Lesa Griffith, the director of communications. Students and kamaaina get excellent values on annual passes. Since our poll, there’s been big changes in the art world; check out page 43 for more. 900 S. Beretania St., 532-8700, honoluluacademy.org.
