Editors' Pick

When you walk into George H. Sasaki Jewelers, you don’t see showy jewelry cases. Instead, you sit with owner Hans Sasaki, the son of the company’s founder, or Hans’ daughter, Aja, and talk. They find out what kind of diamond, engagement ring or watch you’re looking for, and then bring you samples and help you create a custom piece. The company, which also does repairs, was started in 1936 by George Sasaki, who sold jewelry and such appliances as radios door to door. In 1955, he opened his jewelry store on Fort Street, where Ross is now located. (George passed away in 2004.) Hans, an architect by training, joined the business in the early 1970s and received his degree as a graduate gemologist, while Aja started working alongside her grandfather and father when she was in the ninth grade. “All of our business is referrals,” says Hans Sasaki. “It’s pleasant, because it’s more like visiting with friends.” Pioneer Plaza, Suite 1555, 900 Fort Street Mall, 533-1633, sasakijewelers.com.
