On a rainy afternoon, nothing lightens a dreary mood more than an old-fashioned, tangy, moist lemon cake. Unless that cake is topped and layered with a perfect, zesty buttercream frosting. “It has a lot of butter in it, but, we balance that with vitamin C since there’s fresh lemon,” jokes Grand Cafe Bakery & Cafe’s owner, Mona Chang. The recipe is top secret, a longtime family favorite that has been perfected over the generations. Chang bakes four to five of the cakes a week, working with her baking partner, Patsy Izumo. 31 N.
