If you’re looking to explore Hawaii’s extraordinary outdoors, the best way to take it to the next level is the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club. HTMC was founded in 1910 and the members of the club hike a different trail together every week, sometimes even Neighbor Island trails. The biggest reason to join is access: Many of the trails hiked by HTMC are off-limits to the general public (at least legally speaking). Other benefits of the club include training sessions, swap meets and an exclusive clubhouse near the beach in Waim-analo. “Half the fun of hiking with the club is not the exercise you get hiking the trails, but the camaraderie you’ll enjoy with other people from all walks of life,” says Ralph Valentino, who handles public relations for HTMC. htmclub.org.
