Way to See Wildlife

Editors' Pick

Helpfully! Every year, volunteers are needed by the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary
to count the whales as they winter in the Islands, to monitor their population. The 2010 Sanctuary Ocean Count started in January and is being conducted at 60 sites on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island. You can still pitch in—the season’s last counting day is Saturday, March 27, from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. To register on Oahu, call 397-2651, ext. 253. For more information, see hawaiihumpbackwhale.noaa.gov.
