Place for Book Lovers

In the age of the Internet and the Kindle, the concept of a regular old one-place-at-one-time book may be in danger of becoming passe. But at UH Manoa’s Hamilton Library Special Research Collection, you can find a reminder of why we fell in love with books in the first place: first editions of Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer, Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind and many other treasures, carefully preserved and indexed. The rare books are only available to the public during certain hours of the week, but the inconvenience just adds to their allure. “Every day I am delighted by some item in the collection: the illustrations, a carved wood cover, the texture of the paper,” says Lynn Davis, head of the preservation department at the library. 2550 McCarthy Mall, 956-7214, library.manoa.hawaii.edu.
