Bead stores can often be a little cookie-cutter, with a standard selection of the same old beads. At Dacs Beads, however, owner Alethia Donathan blows and shapes her own glass beads, ensuring a unique selection, from etched and enamel beads to red anthurium pendants. Donathan, a self-taught lampworker (glassblower), is in demand on the Mainland and even Japan. She also hand-selects the other beads in her store, including glass beads from the Czech Republic and turquoise beads obtained directly from gemstone miners. You can even make beads yourself; Donathan teaches classes from her home studio as well as conducting a lampworking class every semester through the Farrington High School adult education program. 1284 Kalani St., Suite 104, 842-7714, www.dacsbeads.com.
