It’s tough to recall a Hawaii store opening that was as hotly anticipated as that of the Kahala Whole Foods Market in September. “There were shoulder to shoulder crowds for the first four days,” says Larry Hoover, Whole Foods Market team leader. “We were pleasantly surprised at the turnout.” Since then, the upscale grocery store has lived up to the hype, with gourmet ingredients, hot food and items from more than 40 Hawaii vendors. Almost a third of the produce section, for example, is devoted to locally grown fruits and veggies. There are more Whole Foods locations on the way, including spots in Ward Centre and Kailua, but fans will have to bide their time; the next scheduled opening is the Kahului store, in January 2010. 4211 Waialae Ave. Suite 2000, 738-0820,
