Pat Banning’s Kailua shop carries a roughly 50/50 split of new and used books, both shelved right alongside each other. “It’s like a treasure hunt,” says longtime clerk Ann Young. The requisite best sellers are available, of course, but Bookends’ forte remains its quirky selection of used books, including noteworthy Hawaiiana and an “old weird stuff” section with all kinds of oddball treasures.
