BEST HULA HALAU

READERS' PICK

Halau Na Kamalei

In 1975, Hawaiian music legend Robert Cazimero founded Halau Na Kamalei, the first all-male hula troupe, helping to encourage more men to participate in the hula. The impact of Na Kamalei, which took top honors in the Merrie Monarch in 2005, will continue to be felt well into the future, as many of its graduates—Manu Boyd, Michael Casupang and Moses Crabbe—now lead halau of their own. “For me, hula is life—that remarkable statement was taught to me by my kumu, Maiki Aiu Lake, and has become the mantra for myself and the gents of Halau Na Kamalei,” Cazimero says.
