During the yearly Nike Reuse-a-Shoe program, thousands of old athletic shoes pile up outside Niketown in Waikiki. It’s a cool spectacle and a good cause—the old shoes are recycled into a material called Nike Grinds, which in turn is used to create sport surfaces, such as playgrounds, running tracks and soccer fields. But you don’t have to wait for next April’s event to unload your old sneaks: A bin just inside Niketown collects the shoes year-round. Any brand of athletic footwear is accepted, as long as the shoe does not have spikes or cleats.
