Not all teppanyaki chefs are Japanese. At Kobe Steak House & Sushi Bar, a diverse group of chefs from all over Asia has entertained patrons for the past 38 years. Israel “Joe” Pacis Savellano (left) first started working at Kobe when he arrived from the Philippines 14 years ago. “I’ve worked just about every job here, from bussing tables to washing dishes,” he says. Today, Savellano’s place is happily in front of customers. “I love their reactions,” he says. “They tell me the food is delicious, and I feel good.”
