St. Augustine may be the most visible church in Waikiki, but for devout Protestants on vacation, the Waikiki Baptist Church offers a welcoming place of worship. “On any given Sunday, 60 percent of the congregation will be tourists,” says pastor Andrew Large. “Of course, not all of them are necessarily Baptist.” In addition to keeping its doors open for visitors, the church is also hard at work helping out the local community, with a hamburger ministry for those Large calls “the houseless,” and a renewed outreach effort to the young people of Waikiki. “We’re in a real growth spurt right now,” he says. “It’s exciting.”
