During her 25 years of travel industry work, Luana Maitland realized that many Waikiki visitors wanted more than just sun and surf. “People always asked me about my culture and my people,” she says. That’s why Maitland loves her job as events and activities manager at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach, where she oversees cultural programs for guests. In addition to teaching hula and ukulele classes, Maitland brings in Hawaiian practitioners to demonstrate lauhala weaving and canoe making. She also puts her own spin on American holidays. On Arbor Day, the hotel gave away agriculturally inspected cuttings of native plants and featured a Hawaiian healer to discuss herbal medicine. “I’m so lucky to be able to share my culture every day,” she says.
