“Where Is He?” by Philippe Gross

Gross wins a weekend getaway for two at the Halekulani, including two night’s accommodations and daily breakfast; a $100 gift certificate to Ritz Camera and a complimentary one-year subscription to HONOLULU Magazine.

Phillipe Gross has a 40-year history with amateur photography. He started shooting in his native Switzerland at age 8 and doing his own darkroom work by 16. A desire to learn English brought him to Hawaii 25 years ago, and he’s currently an instructor of psychology at Kapiolani Community College. His winning photo was shot at an infinity pool in Waikiki—you can just make out the transition from pool to ocean along the top of the image. “The light was beautiful toward the end of the evening, and lot of couples in the pool were taking pictures of each other,” says Gross. “So the mood was very romantic, [yet] one girl was looking for her significant other and just had the light right on her. I liked the emotion created by her looking for her [partner] while the other couples were together. There was this tension on top of the beauty.”
