HIFF comes only once a year, but Asian-cinemaphiles don’t have to wait to find new gems from across the Pacific.
Asiapacificfilms.com, which launched in October, offers instant access to a small (232 at last count) but growing collection of subtitled indie flicks from all over Asia.
You can browse the site by country, theme, genre and filmmaker, or just check out the recent additions. If something piques your interest, just click and enjoy.
The actual viewing experience is pretty good, considering the movie is playing in your browser; if you’ve ever watched a high-quality YouTube clip, you’ve got the basic idea. Whether or not you’re interested in watching a movie on your computer screen is going to depend on how comfortable your computer setup is.
The movies themselves come from across Asia, including Singapore, China, India and Indonesia. Not every country gets equal billing—almost half of the films are from South Korea, there are 43 flicks from Iran, which isn’t quite Asia, and Japan only has one.
A subscription is $8.99 a month, which includes unlimited access to the film collection. Asiapacificfilms.com.
