In 1984, HONOLULU Magazine established its Hale Aina Awards as the Islands’ first local restaurant awards. Before then, culinary awards in the Islands had been given by Mainland travel interests. The Hale Aina Awards were the first to recognize local tastes.
Over the past 25 years, the Hale Aina Awards have been much imitated, but they still stand out, as the most prized dining awards in the Islands.
Hale Aina means “eating place.” It is the closest Hawaiian equivalent to the word restaurant. But Hale Aina has come to mean the most prestigious dining awards in the Islands. They act as a guide to readers about where to eat, they bolster a restaurant’s reputation and they have been publicized all over the Mainland and Japan.

The Hale Aina Ballot is your chance to tell us which restaurants you've enjoyed the most over the past year and would like to recommend to your fellow readers. There are 25 categories on the ballot ranging from the best overall restaurants by Island to the best restaurant for delicious desserts.
Only one vote per person (hard copy or online). Duplicate ballots will be deleted. Everyone who votes will have a chance to win dinner for two at the 2010 Hale Aina Awards Restaurant of the Year.
A hard copy of the ballot will appear in the August 2009 issue.

I love great food!
Highway Inn
My husband and I would like to nominate the Lahina Grill as best restaurant in Maui. We visited two weeks ago and found the food and service astoundingly , amazingly perfect in every way. Since we are from the Bay Area, we are used to good/great restaurants. This one could stand with the best!!
We also very much enjoyed Mama's Fish House in Paia, and one of the restaurants in the Four Seasons (forget the name...not Spago, which we did not try.) But the Lahina Grill was truly a most memorable meal.
