Jing Jing Tsong is a genius of an illustrator, based on the Big Island. Her work often appears in the pages of HONOLULU Magazine, and monthly, in my "Afterthoughts" column. Tsong has a knack at taking our writerly, esoteric concepts and somehow translating them into visual expression—sometimes funny, sometimes moving, but always vivid.

Tsong’s just come out with her first board books for toddlers, Sam Surfs and Aloha Zoo. I particularly like Sam Surfs, a tale of living-room adventure inspired by the author, Jane Gillespie's, 2-year-old son, who often pulled out the mini ironing board to “ride waves” in the house. The equally charming Aloha Zoo will be a hit with small children, who can’t seem to get enough of animals and silly rhymes. The books are $7.95 each and from Kaneohe-based BeachHouse Publishing.

And hey, book lovers, don’t forget that this weekend is the Hawaii Book and Music Festival. Admission is free; the festival is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Civic Grounds of Honolulu Hale.
