Open since 1952, the flagship location on Kapahulu Avenue boasts delicious pastries, cakes, Portuguese sweet bread called pau doce and, of course, malasadas, which are basically doughnuts without holes. Using an old and top-secret family recipe, the malasadas come in several varieties. Original remains the most popular, with custard-filled varieties coming in a close second. Feeling adventurous? Try the new flavor (there's a new flavor every two months) or ask for yours with li hing, instead of plain or cinnamon sugar. Reputed for a crisp finish and delicious fillings, its malasadas are a treat. "We are well known around the world for our famous malasadas," said Darlene Young, general manager. "People try to compare us, but no one comes close." Both storefront locations are open 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
