In our 2008 Best of Honolulu issue, Cake Couture was picked for best cupcakes. Emerson-Bass, owner/baker of Cake Couture, offers two genres of hand-size treats: "Classics are the nostalgic kind, with sweet frosting. Gourmet is a grown-up cupcake, perhaps filled with lemon curd or marsh-mallow." Both styles are baked fresh daily with all-natural ingredients. "No Crisco!" says Emerson-Bass. "Madagascar vanilla, Valrhona chocolate, pureed strawberries ..." There's only one thing wrong with her cupcakes: They sell out. Call ahead to make sure there are cupcakes left, or reserve a few in advance. The downtown location is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. or until they sell out of cupcakes. We're advised that the cupcakes hold up well and many people will pick up their cupcakes from this location on a Friday afternoon for a Sunday party. Cupcakes are priced from $2.50 to $3.50 each.
