Photography and magazines have evolved together for a century. It has been a natural pairing; the glossy paper and four-color printing of magazines had an advantage over newsprint in reproducing the photographer’s art. In the early 20th century, this magazine’s predecessor, Paradise of the Pacific, often featured freestanding photos, images that had nothing to do with the surrounding articles, but were simply fascinating revelations. In the 1920s, for example, these were often aerial photographs of the Islands, in which two radical new inventions combined to change the way we saw Hawaii.

If anything, this magazine relies on photography more than ever now, commissioning photographers to enhance the stories we’ve written with unforgettable photos. But we still love the revelations that come from photography for its own sake, so we are pleased to present this year’s winners of the HONOLULU Magazine/Hotels & Resorts of Halekulani Photo Contest.
This year, we introduced all-new categories: portraits, the natural world and the built environment. As the winning photos on the following pages show, photographers can still change the way we see Hawaii.
HONOLULU Magazine thanks our sponsor, Halekulani; our judges, who you can meet on the following page; and especially our contest entrants. Congratulations to all the winners.

I can’t think of any other artistic medium as dynamic and diverse as the constant and creative evolution of photography. Having said that, we tend today to focus (no pun intended!) more on the continuing evolution of photographic digital technology than on content, despite the fact that the dramatic and developing shifts in subject matter and creative technique at this time are equally radical and outstanding.
Such has been the case over the past four years with HONOLULU Magazine’s remarkable annual photography competition. This year’s collection is perhaps the most diverse and progressive to date, and in this regard it has established itself as a significant force in the evolving direction and development of the photographic art form in our great city. Thank you for viewing this wonderful ‘exhibition in print!’
