Kupu A'e 2009: An Evening With the Queen

HYOC (Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus) invites music lovers to Kupu A’e 2009, their annual gala event.  The theme of this year’s dinner is “An Evening with the Queen,” celebrating the musical legacy of Queen Liliu‘okalani.  She lived at Washington Place for more than half a century, and as one of Hawai‘i’s most gifted composers, she filled its halls with sweet music.  Hear her songs come alive again, as HYOC brings music back to Washington Place.

Entertainment by HYOC ensembles, the Galliard String Quartet and Marlene Sai

Honorary Chairperson is veteran entertainer Marlene Sai.  Famous for her gorgeous contralto voice, Sai made headlines with her iconic portrayal of Liliu‘okalani on stage and television.

The evening also honors the contributions of Barbara Smith, Professor Emeritus of Music at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (picture attached).  For more than 50 years, Barbara Smith has been central to the cultural life of Hawaii and to the validation of its multi-cultural heritage.  Through her stewardship of youth, she has assisted ethnic communities in developing a sense of their own identity and an understanding of their culture.
