Food news: New restaurants and special dinners

Sunday brunch at Prima

It’s a busy season for restaurants with Restaurant Week, the holidays and special dinners. Some upcoming events and restaurant updates:

  • Prima is now open for lunch, Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a special brunch menu on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Recent brunch items included shakshuka, a North African dish of poached eggs in a tomato and bell pepper sauce; meatball bruschetta; baked penne; and veal parmesan.

  • Hiroshi’s contemporary kaiseki dinner only happens four times a year. Nine courses reflecting a variety of textures and cooking techniques include a carpaccio of trigger fish, awaawa fish cake and sous vide of mekajiki with foie gras and lobster. The menu finishes off with Shimazu shave ice. Full menu here. Tuesday, November 22.

  • The Kahala brings a traditional Cantonese menu to Plumeria Beach House. Chef Long Cheng Chen is a guest chef from Toh Ka Lin, a Chinese restaurant in four-star Hotel Okura in Tokyo. Dishes include braised abalone in cream sauce, sautéed fried scallops and braised shrimp in chili sauce. Dishes will be offered a la carte from November 13-17 and as a buffet on the nights of November 18 and 19. Reservations: 739-8760 or restaurants@kahalaresort.com.

  • It’s the last Community Plate of the year at 12th Ave Grill on Monday, November 21. The restaurant will donate 15 percent of the evening’s sales to Hawaii Meals on Wheels. Specials include blue crab cakes, Big Island Red Veal chop, and onaga with heart of palm and green apple salad.

New restaurants:

  • Red House opened on 11/11/11 (at 11:11am), featuring Korean fusion plates.

  • Red Cafe, another “red” restaurant (you can’t miss either; both are definitely RED) in the former Club Queen Bee. Late night hours, until 4am, with a sophisticated Chinese/Japanese menu.

Closed:

After less than a year, Broadway Seafood and Oyster Bar closes.
