The health food pitches keep coming: Kale will fight cancer and lower your cholesterol! Coconut water has 16 times the potassium of your favorite sports drink! Green tea is packed with antioxidants!

Alan Joaquin, the serial entrepreneur behind FarmRoof and Wiki Garden, wanted to put all three power ingredients together and came up with Gr3en, his latest kale-fueled product. It’s an organic energy drink, available statewide in most supermarkets. Even the Hokulea made space for 288 cans on its worldwide voyage.

“Necessity is the mother of invention,” says Joaquin. “I was looking for something for myself that was functional, healthy, organic and without chemicals. We wanted to provide something to help an athlete, busy mom or someone stressed out at work.”

We’ve all been there, in need of an extra energy boost. I personally avoid energy drinks because of their sickly-sweet artificial flavor. But Gr3en is not that type of energy drink.

“The big brands have synthetic ingredients and stimulants like taurine and artificial flavors,” says Joaquin. “You don’t know what they are. Why does it make you all twitchy? It’s all the chemicals in it. Gr3en, on the other hand, has nothing artificial or synthetic about it. It’s loaded with antioxidants and nutrients, and engineered with 12 grams of sugar for the optimal energy boost to your glucose levels.”

When I picked up a Gr3en at Whole Foods, the 8.4 oz can was smaller than I expected, particularly for $3.29. But finally, here was an energy drink with ingredients that didn’t read like a foreign language: sparkling green tea, coconut water, cane sugar, kale juice, guarana extract and citric acid. Guarana is Brazil’s caffeine-packed fruit: “In its natural organic plant form, it gives you a heightened sense of clearness and focus, and doesn’t give that jittery hyper buzz,” says Joaquin. “It’s a mellow enjoyable energy boost with clarity to it.”

GR3EN is rather refreshing, fizzy, coconut-y, with a slightly tangy kale aftertaste. I felt a bit buzzed and alert, rather than wired. It was the perfect afternoon pick-me-up, and it grew on me with each sip.

Launch party, Saturday, June 14, 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Rumfire in the Sheraton Waikiki, gr3en.org. Bring in an empty can of GR3N energy to get in for free.
