Theaters of Hawaii Photography

Ground Breaking - Ground is broken in June 1921 for the new Hawaii Theatre downtown, originally planned as the new Bijou. Standing on the old Bijou’s site are Joel Cohen (with straw hat and cigar), president of Consolidated Amusement Company, formed in 1913, and treasurer John Henry Magoon (smiling). Looking on is probably one of the architects, Walter Emory or Marshall Webb, along with John Mason Young, president of the builders, Pacific Engineering Company. A successful businessman, Cohen was also a legislator in 1909 and ran for mayor twice.
