Take a Journey

For those nights when telling your date that you love them is better sung than said, serenade them at Wang Chung’s, a tiny little karaoke bar hidden in an alley of Waikiki. The bar screams happiness and camaraderie, so you may gain a few back-up singers while you sing Journey’s lyrics, “I’m forever yours… faithfully” to your lover. 2410 Koa Ave., Waikiki, 921-9176. wangchungs.com. Snap to the Beat

Cozy up together with matching fedoras at one of two of Honolulu’s jazz bars, because there’s nothing else quite like listening to a 5-person jazz band with a glass of wine in hand. The music is loud and the saxophone splits the air, while a guitar, piano, bass and drums accompany it in harmony. Check out the jazz schedules at thedragonupstairs.com or honolulujazzclub.com.

Brewing Romance

Our readers voted Bar 35 as the best bar for singles in our 2010 Best Bars issue. But, there’s actually a reason for couples to visit too, if you know when to go. Every Wednesdays, beer expert Andy Baker leads the House of Brews beer tasting where you have a chance to taste eight different featured beers. It also includes a pizza tasting from Bar 35’s specialty pizza menu. 6 p.m., no reservations necessary, $25, 35 N. Hotel St., 537-3535.

Best First Date

Genius Lounge Sake Bar & Grill won Best Bar for a first date in our 2010 Best Bars issue. Its Spanish-influenced building is full of charm with its wrought iron banisters, exposed beams and tiled tabletops. Choose appetizers, soups, salads, noodles, grilled or katsu dishes off of its large menu. There's lots to explore here with your date, including the sake menu—Genius has 50 varieties. 346 Lewers St., Waikiki. 626-5362. Watch a video from our editors.

Join a Band Together

“I Got You Babe” in the song queue? Check. A shot of liquid courage to steady your voice? Check. You and your partner are ready to belt it out at Nocturna Lounge. If you’re not the singing type, challenge your date to some friendly competition in the form of video games, such as Street Fighter, Mario Kart, Call of Duty, or pick up the guitar and play Rock Band. 500 Ala Moana Blvd, 521-1555, nocturnalounge.com.
