Downing HI

Local waterman George Downing founded this surf shop in 1968; today, it’s owned by his son and daughter, Keone (shown in photo) and Kaiulu. Keone Downing, an accomplished surfer in his own right, says he’s following in the footsteps of his father, whose board-shaping expertise dates back to the 1940s. “Every board has its purpose,” Keone says. “The shape of the board you want depends on what type of waves you ride, your weight and your body type.”
