Airspace Workshop

You might not think of kaimuki as a hotbed of hip design, but Joshua Lake of local media design studio Airspace Workshop says it’s the perfect neighborhood for out-of-the-box creative thinking. “Kaimuki is really a mellow alternative to downtown. It gives you a different perspective, and I think that makes it easier for us to help clients shake things up,” he says.

Since setting up shop in 2001, he and business partner Chris Kalima have done design work for everyone from the Hawaii International Film Festival to Alexander & Baldwin to the new Vanguard Lofts going up on Kapiolani Boulevard. Not bad for a two-man operation. “We’ve stayed small, relying on a lot of freelance associates, and I think it’s helped us remain flexible,” Lake says.
