Anniversary Party

Last year, Halau I Ka Wekiu took top honors at the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo. This year, the Honolulu-based halau will take a break from competition to celebrate its 10 anniversary.  The festivities start with this month's CD release, Listen to Your Heart, featuring songs penned and performed by founding kumu hula Karl Veto Baker and Michael Casupang (sitting left to right), with dancers Kaenaaloha Hopkins and Aukai Reynolds.  "Trips that we have taken as a halau—New Zealand, Haena on Kauai, Kau on Hawaii Island—have resulted in beautiful experiences," Casupang says. "Both of us compose to bring our experiences to life through music." For the halau's anniversary performance schedule, check out www.halauikawekiu.com.  For more on the Merrie Monarch, which runs from March 30 through April 5, visit www.merriemonarchfestival.org.
