Kailua Party

perks to partygoers.

Only one party can bring together restaurants, craftspeople, non-profit organizations, entertainers, retailers and just plain folks from all over Kailua. That’s the “I Love Kailua” Town Party, now in its 13th year. Although the event welcomes people from all over the island, first invitation goes to the people of Kailua.

“It’s the one day of the year that the whole town can come together and celebrate what a great place Kailua is to live,” says Amy Hammond, coordinator of this year’s party.

This community block party has grown bigger each year. Today, it blocks off 700 feet of Kailua Road to showcase Kailua’s treasures. “A Taste of Kailua” features Kailua restaurants, and fresh, hot malassadas.

Radio personality and Kailua resident Michael W. Perry, comes out every year to emcee the shindig. Bands like Puamana and Maunalua also volunteer to set the acoustic mood for a pleasant Sunday afternoon.

It’s not all entertainment. Castle Medical Center, for example, provides free health assessments, from blood pressure screenings to grip strength tests.

If you want something to take home from the party, beautiful orchids and native Hawaiian plants are up for sale along with paintings by local artists and handcrafted items from 50 different craft vendors.

Although people can walk in and join the party at any time, they are encouraged to purchase a donation event button for the beautification of Kailua before they enter. By wearing this button, they receive special offers and discounts from participating stores. This limited edition event button features the Kailua artist Joan Fleming. It’s one of a series of artist-created buttons. “People wear hats and put buttons on them to show how many town parties they have participated in,” says Hammond.

All proceeds from the event go to the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle, which has been keeping the Windward community green and beautiful through landscaping projects since 1948.
