Character, heart and excellence have made Holy Nativity School a shining gem in East O‘ahu for Hawai‘i’s keiki for more than half a century. HNS recognizes that learning happens best in an environment of respect and trust and focuses on personalized learning where every child is truly known. Having added seventh grade this past school year, the school is excited to offer Hawai‘i’s keiki even more in education, with the addition of eighth grade as its culminating year, beginning in fall 2018. Students will graduate equipped for the challenges of Hawai‘i’s finest high schools.

The school’s curriculum follows current neuroscience and research to deliver a program that ensures academic rigor, but also nurtures social and emotional maturity. At HNS, students gain leadership experience within an integrated, project-based curriculum. Teachers use their own creativity to develop programs that inspire students to learn. Students focus on metacognition, and all teachers incorporate yoga to increase mindfulness.

As the first school in Hawaii to incorporate Computational Thinking into the curriculum, HNS students are engaged in critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity using logical thought, precision and data management—skills required in today’s classrooms and careers. Design Thinking, the leading edge methodology used by innovative colleges and companies, also infuses HNS curriculum to inspire students to discover creative, out-of-the-box solutions to problems by focusing on empathy by listening and communicating with others.

Acknowledging the strengths and talents of each individual, students also enjoy weekly specialist classes in performing arts, fine arts, physical education and religion. Unique opportunities for experiential learning are offered through service learning projects, sports and class trips to the Big Island, Maui and Arizona. Seventh- and eighth-grade students will embark on an amazing adventure to New Zealand as part of their program. Student-led initiatives, such as the Buddy Bench Program to foster friendships and this year’s Kids For Climate Change fifth-grade culminating class project, illustrate the ways in which students at HNS make a positive impact on their community.

This one-class-per-grade school includes facilities more often seen at larger schools—three playfields, a full-size gymnasium, art room, performing arts room and computer lab—on a beautiful and open, safe and quiet 2-acre campus. A student-designed, eco-friendly playground, built by the school and local community, and October’s successful annual Great Pumpkin Festival give the HNS community much to celebrate.

“In the Episcopal tradition, we are called to create an inclusive and respectful learning community for all. The growth and development of each child involves many dimensions: heart, mind, body and soul. When you visit our campus, you will see our motto, ‘Character, Heart and Excellence,’ in action.”

Prospective families are encouraged to schedule a personalized campus tour to see firsthand what makes HNS so special.
