Hear parents share their experiences of confusion, fear, love, acceptance and celebration of their LGBTQ children at this Family Acceptance Workshop. This workshop is for parents of LGBTQ kids who would like to talk with other parents who understand the unique cultural issues in our communities. Also welcome are LGBTQ people who want to come out to their parents, or people who are struggling with family acceptance and want to understand different ways to bring them together. If you're already out to your parents, caregivers, or other family members, bring them along!
The Honolulu workshop will feature three parents of LGBTQ children:
- Nora, born in American Samoa, and the proud mother of her gay son Mark Kanemura, the widely-known Lady Gaga dancer and contestant on "So You Think You Can Dance."
- Marsha, a Japanese mother of a transgender son and author of "Two Spirits, One Heart".
- Laurin, a mixed-race mother of a gay son and author of "One of a Kind, Like Me", a children's book that uplifts those who don't fit gender stereotypes.
The Workshop is part of a nationally touring series of programs developed by NQAPIA, the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance in conjunction with their PSA project "Family Is Still Family".
