In the early 1980's, John Salmonson set the vision for a small band of eclectic runners named PJ, Richard, Vernon Ed, Carl and "Radar," who were no longer content with only a marathon. Others would join their ranks along the years. They were soon running 36 miles uphill to the summit of 10,023 ft. Haleʻakala on Maui to train for largely unknown ultras, such as Western States.
The HURT ʻohana of the 80's was a tight-knit and tough group. Decades later, the infamous HURT 100 came to be, challenging the toughest athletes on the planet over relentless rainforest climbs, water crossings and treacherous roots. Since then, hundreds of runners have put their love for the trails to the test on one of the most deceivingly difficult ultras in the world.
