Description

Written and directed by ʻIolani School and University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa alumni, Christopher Makoto Yogi, “August at Akiko’s” tells the story of Zhang, a popular musician and highly regarded saxophone player who returns home to the Big Island after being away for many years. While searching for his grandparent’s home, he meets Masuda, a Buddhist innkeeper, and they begin an unlikely friendship.

Shot entirely on Hawai‘i island in areas along the Hamakua coastline such as Nīnole, Hilo, and Honoka‘a, the film also captured stunning footage in the Leilani Estates area, now covered by the recent lava flows from the Kīlauea eruption.
