2017 Top Doctors: Jay Marumoto, M.D.
Dr. Jay Marumoto is board-certified and received specialty training in advanced arthroscopic surgery/sports medicine at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute, as well as reconstructive-fracture surgery from Switzerland’s AO Institute. As part of the teaching faculty at the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine for 20-plus years, he has taught most of Hawai‘i’s orthopedic surgeons currently in practice at Queens, Straub and Kaiser. He has served as Queen’s chief of orthopedic surgery and president of the Hawai‘i Orthopedic Association.
A published author of medical research, he teaches and lectures nationally and locally on sports injuries of the knee, shoulder, ankle and elbow. He is Hawai‘i’s most senior surgeon in America’s most prestigious orthopedic sports organizations, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
He has been the doctor for the UH men’s basketball team since 2009; prior to that, he was June Jones’ UH football team doctor from 2001 to 2007. Born and raised in Honolulu, he is proud of his family roots and embraces his legacy of community service built by his late grandfather, former Supreme Court Justice Masaji Marumoto, and his mother, retired State Rep. Barbara Marumoto-Coons.
